Zoey was adopted from the Ocean County Shelter, Manahawkin location about 2 years ago. When she was first adopted, she attended a board and train. She is spayed and up to date on shots and microchipped. She lived with 3 children under 10 and was much loved in her home.

Unfortunately, Zoey is back at the shelter and is rescue only, due to an unfortunate incident when she got out of her yard. We are hoping we can find a rescue to pull her, but rescues need a foster!!

Sweet Honey Oats Needs Rescue!!! - Baltimore, MD

Honey Oats: altered female, 3y4m, 56.4lbs

Honey first arrived at the shelter in December 2025 and was adopted shortly after, but was surrendered in April 2026 after attacking the owner’s cat. Following the incident, Honey continued displaying immediate aggression toward the cats in the home, and the owner no longer felt it was safe for her to live with them.



Despite these challenges, Honey has so many wonderful qualities in the right environment. She recently spent time in a foster home where she absolutely blossomed. Her foster described her as sweet, affectionate, curious, and incredibly loving. She enjoys curling up in her bed near her people, going on leisurely walks, and taking in all the sights and smells around her. Honey is crate trained, potty trained, and settles nicely into a home routine. She also did very well with a six-year-old child and was always excited to see him.



Honey greets other dogs calmly and politely in many situations, though she can display assertive behaviors during interactions and would benefit from slow introductions, structure, and continued management around other dogs. During her dog test she remained loose and social overall, offering soft body language and taking breaks appropriately.

Honey Oats needs a cat-free, small-animal-free placement with an experienced rescue or adopter who understands management and behavior support. In the right home, this cuddly girl has the potential to be an incredibly loyal companion.

Reese: unaltered male, 3yo, 29.2lbs

Reese came to the shelter on 4/30 in extremely poor condition and was hospitalized due to severe emaciation and foreign material in his stomach, where he remained under treatment through 5/11.

Bloodwork initially showed mild anemia, low protein levels, and slightly low calcium, though these values improved during treatment. Reese underwent an endoscopy in an attempt to remove foreign material from his stomach, but because not all of the debris could be safely removed that way, he ultimately required a gastrotomy surgery (an operation where the stomach is surgically opened) to remove asphalt and other foreign material.

Despite everything he has endured, Reese has continued to recover and is now back on a regular diet as of 5/20.

Behaviorally, Reese has shown signs of departure anxiety, including vocalizing and pawing at the door when handlers leave the play yard, which is understandable given the amount of stress and instability he has experienced recently.

Reese is currently battling an upper respiratory infection while continuing his recovery, but he has already come a long way from where he started.

Be Garth's Hero!! - Baltimore, MD

Garth: altered male, 8y1m, 57lbs

Garth came to the shelter as a stray on 4/9 and is now looking for a rescue or adopter willing to give this sweet, sensitive boy the support he needs.



Recently, staff have become concerned after noticing that Garth seems slower, less interested in his surroundings, and generally not quite himself following time spent in isolation recovering from an upper respiratory infection. There is also concern for a possible head tilt, and he would benefit from placement where he can continue to decompress and receive further monitoring and veterinary follow-up.



Garth showed so many wonderful qualities while in a foster home. His foster describes him as an incredibly easy dog to live with; housetrained, respectful in the home, and able to settle beautifully without needing a crate. He enjoys relaxing on the couch, curling up on a blanket nearby, or quietly resting at his people’s feet while they go about their day.



Garth is also an affectionate and gentle companion who loves simply being near his people. He softly nudges for pets, rests his head in laps for attention, and enjoys being included in family activities. His foster described him as a “super sweetheart” with a calm, loving personality and a nice independent side as well.



Outside, Garth’s playful personality starts to shine. He enjoys walks, exploring, and spending time outdoors. He already knows several cues including sit, lay down, bed, wait, and come!



Garth has shown some stress-related behaviors in the shelter environment. Mounting behaviors were noted during periods of heavy handling and during dog interactions, appearing related to overstimulation or anxiety. He has also shown some resource guarding around toys in shelter, though staff have consistently been able to redirect and trade successfully, and his foster did not observe guarding behaviors in the home. Foster notes also mention separation-related vocalization and pacing when left alone initially, though he was still able to settle over time.



During his dog test, Garth displayed tense but steerable behavior with mounting attempts toward another male dog but did not escalate and responded appropriately to handler intervention.



Garth is a thoughtful, affectionate dog who has shown that he can thrive in a home environment. He is looking for a rescue partner willing to continue supporting him medically and behaviorally while giving him the stability and comfort he clearly craves.

Be a Hero for Goliath!!! - Baltimore, MD

Goliath: unaltered male, 1y6m, 89.2lbs

Goliath came to the shelter as a stray on 5/18 and required sedation at intake due to behavior in the kennel, including lunging. He is currently on a behavior hold and is not available for public adoption at this time.

Despite this, he has shown periods of manageable behavior with handling since settling in.

Radiographs show several orthopedic concerns, including mild hip dysplasia on the right side (a loosely formed hip joint that can lead to pain and arthritis), mild fluid in the right knee indicating inflammation, and a partial tear of the cruciate ligament in the left hind leg (similar to an ACL injury in people). He does not yet have advanced arthritic changes, but his left knee injury will likely require a specialized surgical stabilization procedure that the shelter cannot provide.

Goliath also has entropion in both eyes, a painful condition where the eyelids roll inward and irritate the surface of the eye, which typically requires surgical correction.

Veterinarians recommend orthopedic surgery for his left knee and surgical repair of his eyelids to improve comfort and long-term quality of life. Keeping him at a lean body weight is also important to reduce strain on his joints.

Goliath will need rescue support to access the specialty medical and behavioral stabilization care he requires. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.

Possibly hit by car PBT needs rescue commitment NOW, has $$$ in pledges!! BALDWIN MD!

Meet Mambo

Mambo arrived at our shelter after being brought to a local pet ER after possibly being hit by a car. X-rays preformed revealed a luxated hip with acetabular fracture. She is exhibiting non-weight bearing lameness on her right hind leg and abrasions on her hip. Our vet team has started her on pain medication and cage rest. Her injury will require surgery to fix and she may be a good candidate for an FHO (femoral head and neck osteotomy) in which the head of the femur is removed, but she would retain the use of this leg or an amputation.

She has been easy for our staff to work with and has been a star patient for our medical team.

Maybell: altered female, 12y5m, 39.4lbs

Maybell came in as a stray on 5/15, she has showed signs of increased urination and possible blood in the urine. She has been very gentle, calm, and easygoing with staff.

Maybell is housebroken and walks nicely on leash, moving at a relaxed pace and enjoying simple companionship. She is very treat-motivated and takes snacks happily, and she seeks out gentle attention. She would do best in a quiet home where she can be comfortable and enjoy her senior years.

Maybell has moderate to severe dental disease (grade 3–4/4), meaning her teeth and gums are significantly diseased and likely causing discomfort, and she will likely need dental treatment. She also has an enlarged lymph node under her jaw on the right side, which can happen with infection or inflammation in the mouth or nearby tissues.

Her eyes show cloudiness in both lenses, most consistent with normal age-related changes, though other eye conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma have not been fully ruled out.

She is also being evaluated for urinary concerns, including possible blood in the urine and increased urination. A urine test showed a significant amount of blood and elevated protein, which strongly suggests inflammation or irritation somewhere in the urinary tract, such as the bladder or kidneys. While the urine was otherwise fairly unremarkable, these findings indicate an underlying issue that still needs further diagnostic workup to determine the exact cause.

Maybell is a sweet, steady senior who deserves comfort, medical care, and a peaceful place to land.

Second Plea!! Open Your Heart to Sweet Bulldozer!! - Baltimore, MD

Bulldozer: altered male, 9yo, 48.2lbs

Bulldozer arrived at BARCS on 4/18 after the heartbreaking loss of his owner. Since then, this sweet senior has been adjusting to shelter life while grieving the only home he’s ever known. Despite everything, he remains incredibly gentle, steady, and affectionate.



He is an easygoing walker who moves at a calm pace and enjoys taking in his surroundings without pulling or rushing. Bulldozer is very polite and easy to handle, and he already knows basic cues like “sit,” especially when treats are involved.



Bulldozer recently enjoyed a weekend slumber party with a volunteer and was described as an extremely easy houseguest. He is housebroken, settled well in the home, and was happy to relax, nap, and quietly keep his person company. He is also a great car rider and enjoys being included in everyday activities.



He has done several “Dogs Day Out” outings, including hikes, Petco trips, backyard relaxation, and time at Lake Montebello, where he continues to show how well-mannered and adaptable he is in different environments.



During his dog test Bulldozer became uncomfortable with very pushy dogs and gave appropriate corrections when needed.



Bulldozer has multiple skin masses that appear benign. He has been licking/biting at a mass on his right hind leg, and an e-collar was placed to prevent irritation. Mass removal is being considered if it continues to irritate him.



Bulldozer is a calm, loving senior who is ready for comfort, stability, and a home again. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.

Be a Hero for Cherry Garcia Today!!! Suspected CCL Injury!! - Baltimore, MD

Cherry Garcia: unaltered female, 2yo, 35.2lbs

Cherry Garcia came to the shelter as a stray on 5/17 and has been nothing but friendly and cooperative since arrival. Staff describe her as a lovely dog to handle, with a calm and easygoing demeanor that has made her a favorite to spend time with.



Cherry Garcia is currently showing lameness in her left hind leg. Shelter veterinarians suspect she may have a partial or complete CCL tear, which is similar to an ACL injury in humans, though other orthopedic issues have not yet been ruled out. She will need a full orthopedic evaluation along with radiographs of her hips and knees while sedated or under anesthesia to better determine the cause of her discomfort and the treatment she may need moving forward.



The shelter is hoping to obtain sedated radiographs at the time of her spay surgery to help gather more information while minimizing additional stress on her.



Despite her mobility concerns, Cherry Garcia remains social, cooperative, and gentle with handling. She deserves the chance to receive proper diagnostics and care in a rescue environment where her medical needs can be fully addressed.

Mushroom: unaltered male, 10yo, 9.6lbs

Mushroom came to the shelter on 5/15 after being removed from a home with severe neglect conditions, including overwhelming urine and feces odors and excessive trash and debris throughout the environment. Despite everything he has endured, Mushroom has remained incredibly gentle and easygoing.

This sweet senior walks beautifully on leash and enjoys slowly taking in the world around him. He is very treat motivated and comes over happily for snacks, taking treats softly and politely from your hand. Once comfortable, Mushroom seeks out affection and enjoys gentle pets and chin scratches.

Mushroom is dealing with severe flea-related skin disease and active fleas, though additional hormonal skin disease has not yet been ruled out. He also has significant dental disease, a heart murmur that will need further evaluation, and severely overgrown nails, which have since been trimmed. Shelter vets are recommending senior bloodwork and a dental procedure in the future to help keep him comfortable and healthy.

Mushroom is such a kind, calm soul who clearly deserves a chance to spend his senior years in comfort instead of neglect. He is in need of rescue placement to continue his medical care and finally experience stability and love.

Pressure: 10y/o FIV+ Brown Tabby Needs Rescue!

Meet Pressure, a 10-year-old brown tabby in need of rescue. Brought into our care as a stray, much of his past remains a mystery. However, he did spend some time with his finder prior to intake, and they described him as a friendly, social cat who appeared very interested in their resident cats, although they were never directly introduced.

Since arriving in our care, Pressure has struggled significantly with the shelter environment. He has been fearful and withdrawn, spending most of his time hiding and avoiding interaction. Because of this, we determined that a foster home would be the best placement for him, but progress has been slow as he continues to adjust and decompress.

A full medical evaluation revealed several ongoing concerns. Pressure has severe dental disease that will require extractions, chronic diarrhea that has not resolved despite treatment attempts and will need further diagnostics, and he has also tested positive for FIV. In foster, he has additionally been having fecal accidents outside the litterbox, though notably he consistently urinates appropriately in the box.

Despite everything, Pressure is a sweet senior cat who deserves the chance to feel safe and comfortable again. We are hopeful that a dedicated rescue can provide the patience, medical support, and quiet environment he needs to come out of his shell and enjoy his golden years in peace.

Sammie: altered male, 12yo, 7.5lbs

Sammie arrived at the shelter on 5/2 after the passing of his owner. At intake, he was severely emaciated and immediately placed on a strict refeeding plan. He also presented with a wound on the back of his neck requiring ongoing medical attention.

Sammie went into foster care on 5/9, where he initially appeared to be stabilizing. However, he experienced vomiting episodes on 5/11 and 5/15. Since then, his foster reports no additional vomiting, but he developed diarrhea around the same time, which has persisted as brown liquid stool 1–3 times daily. Due to the GI upset, dry food was discontinued.

In recent days, Sammie’s appetite has decreased. He has been offered canned food (approximately one can daily), but is now only consuming about half of that amount. Interestingly, he will still eat small amounts of dry food when offered and has kept it down without vomiting. Despite these concerns, he remains bright, active, and engaged.

The wound on Sammie’s neck remains open with scabbing and mucoid discharge. Because of its location in a high-motion area, the skin continues to separate with head movement. Veterinary assessment indicates that primary closure is needed for proper healing. If his appetite or weight gain continues to decline, further diagnostics including bloodwork and urinalysis will be required to rule out underlying disease.

Sammie is a fragile cat who has already endured significant loss. He now requires close medical monitoring, wound management, and a stable environment to continue his recovery. A full medical summary is available upon request.

Meet Howie 🐾

Howie is a Cane Corso mix with a gentle soul who’s still learning that the world can be a safe and loving place. He came to us at around 8 months old alongside four of his littermates, and it’s clear he didn’t get much early socialization. Because of this, Howie is extremely timid and can be unsure in new situations or around unfamiliar people.

Despite his shyness, there’s a sweet, sensitive dog just waiting to blossom. Howie will need a patient and understanding adopter who’s willing to move at his pace and help him build confidence through positive experiences. With time, consistency, and kindness, he has so much potential to grow into a loyal and devoted companion.

URGENT senior cat with history of litterbox issues in need of rescue, BALDWIN MD

Meet Ariel

Ariel was surrendered to us after her owner lost their housing. She did previously live with another cat and a large breed dog and was reported to have done well. Her previous owner reported her energy level to be calm.

Her previous owner also reported she would occasionally go outside of the litterbox. We did monitor her litterbox usage here at the shelter for 7 days and Ariel did go outside of the box 3 out of the 7 days. Our vet team also collected urine to do a glucose test and an azostick test. Both of those came back normal with only small amount of white blood cells on the UA test strip, but nothing on sedimentation. At this time, we do not see a medical cause for her inappropriate litterbox usage. We have provided her with a larger litterbox to see if that resolves the issue.

Here at the shelter, she can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly. She likes enjoys chin scratches, laying up high on her shelf or on her soft bed.

Lily is searching for a rescue or adopter that can give her the understanding, structure, and second chance she deserves. This sweet girl came to us as an owner surrender after her family felt they did not have enough space to properly care for her. Prior to that, Lily had lived on a farm where she unfortunately killed their chickens. Lily also previously lived with children of all ages and was reported have done well with them. She is also reported to be housebroken.

Here at the shelter, Lily has shown that she is a social butterfly and cannot wait to make new friends, human and dog alike. She is outgoing, social and greets everyone calmly and gently. She truly thrives on companionship and interaction.

Lily is currently seeking rescue placement or a family/individual that understands her needs and can help her succeed. Stretch's Story

13 yr old Stretch's life has been turned upside down. He was living on a large property down in NC and sadly his owner passed away. He now finds himself looking for a new forever home.
