Chagga - 3yo, altered M, 37.8lbs
Chagga was surrendered last week through no fault of his own and is having a very difficult time adjusting to the shelter environment. This sweet, silly little boy is extremely kennel stressed, and it’s beginning to take a toll on him. According to his previous owner, Chagga is crate trained and has been great with people. In the shelter, he seeks out human interaction, loves running around the yard with his toys, and shows just how affectionate and goofy he can be once he’s outside of the kennel. He truly is the sweetest little baby who just needs stability and reassurance.
However, the stress of confinement is amplifying some challenging behaviors. Chagga presents with high arousal and limited manners, including intense jumping straight up toward handlers’ faces, muzzle punching while jumping, and mouthiness around food. He shows clear separation-related distress, howling, barking, pawing at gates, and escalating when placed back into his kennel. During intake, he air snapped during handling, and his previous owner noted that he can be territorial with new people.
Chagga is undersocialized and uncomfortable around most dogs. He has displayed tense, pushy, and assertive behavior with a male dog and sexually motivated, pushy greetings with a female dog, struggling to read cues or accept corrections. He also shows barrier reactivity in the kennel and play yard, including fixating, barking, and muzzle punching at dogs on the other side of a gate, though he can disengage when prompted by a handler.
Medically, he is overall healthy besides being underweight and alopecia of bony points. Chagga is an overwhelmed dog who is deteriorating in a kennel setting and is seeking rescue placement.
