Ford: unaltered male, 2yo, 2.3lb
Ford came to the shelter on 5/12 as an owner surrender due to behavioral concerns in the home.
He has a history of resource guarding and fear-based reactivity, with previous reports noting growling, lunging, and a risk of biting when warning signals are ignored. The previous owner also reported not feeling comfortable taking items such as food, toys, or bones.
In the home, Ford was described as selective with handling, he prefers to approach new people on his own terms, may sniff and disengage, and does not consistently accept petting. A bite incident was reported during grooming when he broke skin. Similar fearful and protective behaviors have been documented both in the previous home and observed in the shelter environment.
In shelter care, Ford is tolerant of touch from handlers initially, but shows increasing stress signals and cut-off behaviors with continued full-body petting, indicating a low threshold for prolonged handling.
Despite these challenges, he has been noted to walk calmly and remain non-reactive to people and other animals in some outdoor settings per prior reports. He will need a highly experienced, behavior-focused placement that can provide structure, boundaries, and a slow adjustment period.
Recommendations include professional training support, strict management around resources, and a minimum two-week decompression period with careful supervision.
