Heirloom Tomato: unaltered male, 10m8d, 52.6lbs
Heirloom Tomato was found as a stray on 4/6 and is now struggling to navigate the shelter environment.
At first glance, Heirloom Tomato shows a very different side, he is easy to leash, social on approach, and actively seeks out attention, often greeting people with a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail. He enjoys engagement and will happily take treats, showing a motivated, people-oriented personality. He is also reported to be housebroken.
However, once in more confined or hands-on settings, Heirloom Tomato becomes highly aroused and unpredictable. During his intake exam, he escalated quickly without clear warning, snapping toward a handler’s face and continuing to growl, lunge, and fixate, even after a handler switch. During handling, he made contact with a staff member’s arm and held on (no injury), requiring intervention to disengage.
During interactions, Heirloom Tomato can be jumpy and easily overstimulated, especially when treats are involved. He appears to struggle with impulse control, particularly in high-arousal situations.
During his dog assessment, Heirloom Tomato displayed conflicted social skills. He was initially appeasing but became overstimulated, showing mounting behaviors, prolonged greetings, and difficulty reading social cues. He was especially overwhelming with smaller dogs, showing poor self-moderation and requiring intervention.
He appears medically healthy, and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.
