Payton - 1yo, altered M, 43.8lbs
Payton is sweet boy who is seeking rescue to escape the shelter environment. Payton first came to us as a stray; scared and in need of care. He was later adopted but recently returned to the shelter through no fault of his own due to altercations with a resident dog in the home. In those incidents, Payton was the victim and did not bite. Despite the instability he’s experienced, there is no history of aggression toward humans and no known previous issues with dogs prior to the in-home conflict. Payton has truly been through a lot and deserves a fresh start.
Behaviorally, Payton is a sweet, affectionate boy who is quickly stealing hearts at BARCS. This certified cuddle bug loves leaning in for attention and sharing his happy energy. He walks beautifully on leash, stays engaged with his handler, and is easy to manage. He knows basic commands such as “sit” and “down,” appears to be house-trained, and keeps his tail wagging almost nonstop. In shelter, he can be very tense around male dogs and is somewhat more tolerant of female dogs. He has shown he can calmly coexist with polite dog friends but would likely do best with thoughtful introductions and management. Per a previous finder, he displayed food resource guarding toward humans, though no further details were provided. He has not shown aggression toward humans in our care.
Medically, Payton arrived emaciated with bite wounds and was experiencing severe, rapid weight loss. Since then, he has been steadily gaining weight and is otherwise overall healthy. He remains a gentle, loving dog who simply needs TLC and love.
Payton is available for pickup on Thursday 2/12 at 6:00pm.
